Precious things

Around 30 of Rotherham’s looked after children have celebrated a victory after a campaign to stop the practice of children’s personal belonging being transported in black bin liners between foster placements was successful.

The children, all members of the Looked After Children’s Council (LACC), took their campaign to council chiefs and the Corporate Parenting Panel, telling of their own experiences of having their personal belongings and precious things put into bin liners instead of suitcases.

The Panel gave its assurance that the practise would stop and the council’s Children and Young People’s Service has adopted a new policy that prohibits the use of bin liners for moving personal belongings.

Here some of the children share their stories. The voices are those of our looked after children, but to protect their privacy the photographs are of models.
